Alabama A&M women's basketball team features taller lineup

NORMAL – The Alabama A&M women's basketball team has a rather unique makeup for the 2014-15 season.

The Lady Bulldogs, who were 6-23 overall last season, boast a roster of one grad student, two seniors, eight juniors and three freshmen. There are no sophomores for second-year Head Coach Semeka Randall.

Brittney Strickland, the grad student, will be the catalyst for the Alabama A&M offense. The 5-foot-5 guard was named to the preseason All-SWAC second team. Last season, she averaged 17.2 points and 3.2 assists per game.

The Lady Bulldogs will also ride on a talented – and taller – junior class to contend in the Eastern Division.

Randall has four players 6-foot and taller on the roster to help overcome last season's glaring weakness under the boards. The Lady Bulldogs averaged 35.4 rebounds a game to their opponents' 42.6 per game.

The Lady Bulldogs open their season Friday at Southeast Missouri State and then visit Murray State on Sunday.

Also on their road schedule a pair of SEC schools. Alabama A&M visits Tuscaloosa to face Alabama (Nov. 26) and Ole Miss (Dec. 20).

They open the home schedule Nov. 29 with Louisiana Tech and first-year coach Tyler Summitt, the son of former Tennessee Lady Vols head coach Pat Summitt.

A Tennessee grad, Randall played for Summitt in 1998-2001 and was all-American in 1999 and 2000 while helping the Lady Vols win the 1998 national championship with a 39-0 record.

The Lady Bulldogs were picked to finish sixth in the SWAC preseason poll.
