AAMU Women's Basketball Defeats Montevallo 64-62

NORMAL -- Senior Shundray Davis scored 20 points to lead the Alabama A&M women’s basketball team past the University of Montevallo, 64-62, in exhibition action on Wednesday evening in the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.

AAMU struggled with the aggressive UM defense in the first half giving up 14 first half turnovers leading to 11 Falcon points. Davis, a native of Montgomery, Ala., went two of five from the field in the first half including hitting three of four from the charity stripe. Freshman Ebony Johnson tallied a double digit score in the first half with 10 points.

The Lady Bulldogs were focused on rebounding and defense entering the start of the second half.

The Falcons continued to use their length to an advantage on the glass, out-rebounding A&M, 16-15, in the second half to give them a 49-32 edge in the game. With this rebounding margin, Montevallo was able to earn five second-chance points in the game.

The Maroon and White were down as much as 17 in the second stanza. Key plays helped lead A&M on the inside and out to chip away the Falcons lead within two 50-52, on a three pointer from newcomer Christyn Hopper. The Lady Bulldogs took its first lead of the game on an basket and foul that sent Davis to the line to close the gap at 55-54, with 4:29 remaining in the game.

Free throws helped the Lady Bulldogs down the stretch to extend it largest lead of the game 64-59 with three seconds remaining. Montevallo hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to end the game 64-62.

Four Lady Bulldogs finished the game with double digit points including Davis who finished with 20 points and four rebounds. Nedra Robertson added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Ebony Johnson scored 10 points and pulled in four rebounds.

For the game, the Lady Bulldogs shot 51% from the floor and 15% from beyond the arc.

A&M will next take the court on Nov. 9th against Miles College on to open the 2012-2013 season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
