Mayor James Perkins of Selma, Ala., an Alabama A&M alumnus, has started something in his city and people are starting to catch on. Each year, he invites the tennis teams of Alabama A&M and Alabama State to visit and play some exhibition matches to inspire tennis in the young kids of Selma. It has worked and is growing.
Saturday, Alabama A&M made its annual trek to Selma and had a great time with alums from both Alabama A&M and Alabama State.
"We are more than happy to support Mayor Perkins in this event," Coach Thomas Colvin said. "This is an opportunity to get kids excited about the notion of going to college, to talk with alums who haven't visited the campus in some time, and to enjoy some gorgeous weather and some great hospitality."
"In only 5 years, this program has already developed 3-4 kids who are on their way to college with a tennis scholarship in hand. That's committment from the Mayor, the kids and their parents and I spent most of the day commending them all for their efforts."
