ALEXANDRIA, La. - Alabama A&M's six-match winning streak came to a halt Saturday in the SWAC Tournament semifinals when defending champion Jackson State defeated the Bulldogs 4-1. Denise Cherry dominated Victory Guedez 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles for A&M's only team point. Jasmine Cherry and Alison Gladness won at #3 doubles, but the Tigers won the other two doubles matches to earn the single team point. The Alabama A&M women's tennis team wrapped up regular season conference play Sunday with a 7-0 sweep past Mississippi Valley State and secured a spot in next month's SWAC Tournament in the process. The Bulldogs finish league play with a 4-4 record and will represent the East as the No. 3 seed. After dropping 5-2 decisions to both Jackson State and Alcorn State to open the East roundup over the weekend, the Bulldogs rallied for 7-0 sweeps past Alabama State and Valley to finish out the SWAC regular season. It had been four years since the Ladies of A&M visited Florence, Ala., to meet the Lions of North Alabama. Four years ago, the inhospitable Lions handed the Lady Bulldogs a tough fought 4-5 loss. History always finds a way to repeat itself as the Lions and Lady Bulldogs once again went the distance in a match that was decided just before dark by the last 2 matches. Alabama A&M rookie Te'lsha Mixon has been named Southwestern Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year the league announced Thursday on the eve of the conference tournament. Junior Alison Gladness also earned second-team all-SWAC honors as selected by the league's head coaches. Mixon began the season playing #3 singles and swept through the first round-robin play against Western division teams.
