MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama A&M (5-20, 3-8 SWAC) could not withstand an offensive barrage by Alabama State (17-14, 9-2 SWAC) and dropped a 9-3 decision in an NCAA Division I baseball game on Saturday, April 9.
The Bulldogs would get on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as junior outfielder
Jared Tribett (Lumberton, Miss.) doubled to left center and brought home graduate right fielder
Tim Dixon (Debary, Fla.) for a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets would then respond in the bottom of inning by delivering four runs off four hits including Trenton Jamison signaling through right side a two-RBI that allowed Christian Lopez and Cristopher DeGuzman to score and take a 4-1 advantage.
The score would remain that way until the bottom of the third inning as ASU would then increase their lead as May Hunter scored on a wild pitch for a 5-1 advantage.
The Hornets would then take their biggest lead of the night in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs off four hits that consisted of two RBIs from Hunter. Those brought home DeGuzman and Dilan Espinal for a 9-1 lead.
Pitching would then rule as neither team would affect the score until the top of the eighth inning as the Bulldogs answered loudly with junior third baseman
Tommy Easley (Acworth, Ga.) homering to center field and brought home Tribett to cut the deficit down by six.
The score would remain that way during the ninth and final inning and the Hornets would secure the 9-3 decision.
Hunter led ASU with a 2-of-4 day, two RBIs and two scored runs while both Lopez and Jamison went 2-of-4 with two RBIs and a scored run. Espinal went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored to round out the top performers. Austin King started and threw six innings, striking out 11 and only allowing one earned run to move to 4-1.
Easley led the Bulldogs with a 1-of-4 day, two RBIs, one home run and a scored run and Tribett was 2-of-4 with an RBI and a scored run. Sophomore pitcher
Tyler Campbell (Albuquerque, N.M.) threw 3.1 innings allowing five earned runs and striking out three to fall to 0-6.
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 10 as they wrap up the three-game series against Alabama State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
