BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama A&M (0-7, 0-0 SWAC) dropped a 12-5 decision against Alabama-Birmingham (7-2, 0-0 C-USA) in an NCAA Division I baseball game on Friday, March 4.
After a scoreless first inning the Blazers answered in the bottom of the second as Josh Sears had two RBI doubles to bring home Darryl Buggs and John Mullins for a 2-0 lead. The score would be unbothered for the next two innings before UAB would extend their score in the home half of the fifth with two runs for a 4-0 advantage.
In the sixth, Alabama-Birmingham would take their biggest lead of the afternoon as Mullins homered to right for two RBIs to bring home Peyton Puckett before Christian Hall would hit the second-long ball of the inning, this one a three-run homerun and sears and Mathew Golda scored. They would then add one more run to finish the inning with a 10-0 lead.
The Bulldogs would answer in the top of the seventh as junior outfielder
Jared Tribett (Lumberton, Miss.) doubled to right center for an RBI to bring home sophomore catcher
Dillon Roop (New Market, Ala.) to cut the lead to 10-1.
AAMU would continue pressing the issue as freshman infielder
Janmikell Bastardo (Fort Myers, Fla.) reached on an error to drive home Tribett and sophomore infielder
Trevor Berkemeyer (North Las Vegas, Nev.) to cut the deficit to 10-3.
It would stay that way until the eighth when UAB delivered another homerun this time a two-run shot from Brandon Willoughby that brought home Caleb Floyd to extend their advantage to 12-3.
The Bulldogs would then respond in the top of the final inning as sophomore infielder
Chandler Stocking (Midway, Utah) delivered an RBI single to score graduate outfielder
Nemo Wright but that would be as close as they would get as UAB capped off the 12-5 decision.
Willoughby led UAB with a 2-of-4 day that included three RBIs, a homerun and one earned run scored while Mullins went 1-of-3 with two RBIs and a pair of runs. Golda was 3-of-4 with an RBI, a homerun and three runs. Floyd went 3-for-4 with three runs to round out the top offensive performers. Jackson Reynolds started and threw six innings, allowing one earned runs and striking out seven to move to 1-0.
Berkemeyer led the Bulldogs with a 3-of-4 day and a run scored and Tribett was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored. Stocking went 1-for-4 with an RBI while Roop and Wright added one run apiece. Sophomore pitcher
Tyler Campbell (Albuquerque, N.M) threw 5.1 innings, striking out three to fall to 0-3.
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, March 5 as they continue their series against Alabama-Birmingham. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
