BATON ROUGE, La. - Alabama A&M and Southern lead their respective divisions after Day 1 of the SWAC West Bowling Roundup at Don Carter Lanes. In the match of the day, Alabama A&M’s Addileen Pointer’s 276, including nine consecutive strikes to start the match, helped the Bulldogs to a 988-973 win over Southern in a matchup of the past three SWAC Champions. Pointer led all bowlers with a 224.0 average.
The Bulldogs, defending Eastern Division Champions, went 5-0 and won all three of their divisional matches on Friday to claim the East lead. Jackson State went 2-3 overall (1-1 division) to take second place ahead of Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State, which went winless on the day.
In the West, defending champion Southern went 3-2 overall, 2-1 in divisional play to take the top spot. Grambling State (3-2, 1-1) handed Prairie View (4-1, 1-1) its lone loss in the final match of the day. Texas Southern lost its lone divisional match against Southern but went 3-2 on the day.
Southern’s Shannon Pearson opened with 10 consecutive strikes in posting a stellar 272 score of the day in the first match of the day against Grambling State.
The eight conference teams that sponsor bowling are competing in the first of two Conference roundups to earn a berth in the 2010 SWAC Bowling Championship March 5-7 in Shreveport, LA.
